Why Did the Sand Dredger Penfret Visit Sharpness
Ships visit the port of Sharpness with a cargo or in ballast to take cargo away. The Penfret did neither, simply arriving in ballast, why?

Should this Squirrel really be in a Circus

As the squirrel landed, the tent erupted. Applause rained down like acorns. It had become the squirrel acrobat - the star of the circus. Gloucester & Sharpness Canal versus the River Severn
Просмотров 97114 дней назад
The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal was opened in 1827 to bypass the treacherous part of the River Severn below Gloucester. At Purton barges were placed between the canal and river to prevent erosion, now known as the Purton Hulks. The End of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal

At the western edge of England, where the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal meets the tidal embrace of the Severn River, a quiet drama unfolds. Here, the waterway’s journey culminates-a convergence of history, industry, and nature’s ebb and flow. A Traveller’s Tale Along the River Severn, from Source to Sea
Просмотров 41321 день назад
Embark on an epic journey along the Severn Way, tracing Britain’s longest river from its mountain source to the vastness of the sea. This long-distance hike begins high on the rugged Plynlimon plateau in Mid-Wales, where the Severn’s humble beginnings lie. From there, it descends through the enchanting Hafren Forest, meanders past the historic towns of Llanidloes, Newtown, and Welshpool, and wi...

Tall Ship Kaskelot Leaving Gloucester for the Last Time
I remember when they replaced this with the Argabay and the lads were very excited about a trip down to France to crew her back to Newport! Much better accommodation than the old arga.
Hi Phil, I bet they were, the Penfret looks a nice ship to work on.
Brilliant thank you!!
Thanks Peter, should be one of the Ben Varrey next Saturday.
Excellent video!
Many thanks
Why is my photo of Zanzibar being used in your video publications logo - I do not remember authorising it?
Rude I must say😮
@@knutarneaakra6013 - I agree, yes it is rude to use someone else's photo without asking or crediting them - it's also copyright.
Main reason is that I tried to find the originator of the photo with no luck. I no longer use the pic in current films and slowly am removing old films to replace them with new footage. My apologies.
Most entertaining !
Red duster, UK registry. Well done owners, and thank you for the video.
Yes, a rarity these days.
They was tows up naughty 🛠️⚓🤠 JB
You're old enough to remember when your garden will have been full of birds, and a handful of crumbs thown out of the kitchen window resulted in a flurry of bird activity. That grey is one of the reasons you don't see that any more. I'm also lucky enough to be restoring a few acres of ancient woodland (not far from you, in fact), and in this country it is a constant battle against grey squirrels to mitigate the huge damage they do to our woodlands. Please - do some research into the damage this invasive species is doing. In general, I like your videos, but the public need to be educated about grey squrrels and the huge damage they are doing. They are NOT a friend to British gardens or the countryside.
If only I was that young again, but not like the world is today.
I love all your videos, but this one just winds me up. Greys are rodents with a fluffy tail, due to their introduction into this country our native Reds were at one point driven to near extinction. Any greys on my property are trapped, dispatched and disposed of, they also ruin young trees by chewing off the bark causing ring bark and tree death. SORRY, but not entertainment
I did think like you before I posted video. A house nearby me was over run with them a few years ago.
25/26/27.May ....Tall Ships Festival....All Aboard Me Hearties!!!!
If they can lift the bridge!
Very nice filming, background music very soothing.
I agree about the music and feel just recording the noise of the incoming tide (and it does make quite a 'rushing' noise) would have been interesting. Whilst I don't know the current, we had to run our cruiser engine at 2000 r.p.m. to stem the tide at Sharpness once on high tide waiting for a ship to depart the docks. Isn't Chris's soft Gloucester burr soothing ?
Nice video of a vsl passing The Point, at my hometown where I spent many an hour watching the ships passing when I was a teenager. More recently I have been aboard several of these typical Japanese woodchip carriers in Asian ports. Well run, with all Filipino crew. When did you film this? Vsl is at present in Vietnam.
Thanks Richard, I wish I could get to Portishead more often.
Great filming Chris, as always, thanks for sharing 😁😁😁
My pleasure. Difficult to produce maritime only films so have to upload more of a variety of subjects.
Hi chris, i'v had a love of anything to do with the bristol channel since my younger days, and having discoverd your channel months ago today we visited sharpness docks as per your video, what a lovely place, we have said we will make sure we come back when there is a departure or arrival as that must be an amazing site to see. Keep up the good work young man, thank you.
Thanks Keith, the same passion for me
no pride in their ship.
I'd hate to be on that bridge rolling my way across the Bay of Biscay with a steel cargo. ☹ Well spotted the Union flag was upside down and it's meaning. 👍
i lived in lydney for seven years wonderful little town friendly people
Many thanks for your comments Veronica, much appreciated.
Asta, are you in trouble. Your Union Flag is UPSIDE DOWN !
Hello Chris. Love your videos of the ships entering the port. Talk about a handbake turn! Is that an old Mersey ferry hiding in the corner? Possible video perhaps? Phil
Thanks Phil, yes an old Mersey ferry that has been here for a long time. Looking in a sorry state.
Thank you Chris. Lovely to see the old photographs of Sharpness. Also wonderful to see the drone footage of Sharpness today with vessels in the docks. Went to the Perton hulks as a little kid, had a fantastic time. Did some work at Awre when I was younger (worked on a farm), first time I really got to see how fast the tide was there. Thank you again. A wonderful and informative film
Many thanks for your comments. I am new to flying the drone, some days it is easy, some days I lose it up in the sky! Apparently I am not the only one to do this.
Used to play on the barges as a kid get coins and stuff from the blower go fishing in yhe timber ponds and at taits point and I have been in every one of those cottages there's a secret cottage ruins in the undergrowth and some beaches hidden
I have heard about the dangerous things children got up to there, including swimming in the Severn!
@@ChrisWitts never swam I the Severn a few people got in trouble trying to cross the river not knowing the path
@@ChrisWitts we used to swim in the canal down on the beaches by the old railway crossing bridge on the far side not the tow path side
Oh so proud to be s Bred and Born Son of Gloucestershire..!!!!.River Severn in The Blood.!!!
This is starting to be a most fascinating series of videos about the Gloucester & Sharpness canal. Thanks Chris.
Glad you like it. A delay on the next one, weather and Bank Holiday got in the way!
Really Enjoy the films great intresting !!!
Thank you for your comment, much appreciated
Most enjoyable.
Thank you, more to come about the canal
Thanks great photos we knew quite a few of the places :)
Thanks Shaun, keep watching
Very interesting. Thanks for posting
Bymacks , mawdsleys, Baileys, Listers.... All gone.. No real employment and countless fields buried under housing. Dursley was much better 30 years ago.
I agree, some great companies lost forever.
I live near here and I am going to the tall ships festival
PLEASE Can You Get Rid of That of Bloody MUZAK ! It's a Severe Distraction 😲 We Want to Hear YOU ! Bye Bye 👋 👋
My wife says the same!!
Initial thought was why are they closing it!
Every time I see one of these title boards, I think foilers should be on it.
Excellent as always!
Thank you, much appreciated

Thanks Chris, enjoyed that. Looking forward to the next video.
Many thanks for your comments, much appreciated

Good question, with a negative reply, simply, 'I don't know'.
Thank you.

Excellent piece... Intimidating for anyone with a heart condition but I would be able to make maximum use of the benches... Worth it for the history so long as we allow two hours
Yes, it was a shock to my system, showing my age!!
Hello Chris my 96 year old Mum and myself really enjoyed the walk around Stroud , there is much more to see than I remembered many years since I was there . Thank you.
Very kind of you to say, I too enjoy Stroud, but not with my aching legs!!
Super video/clips...Thank you ....From a proud Gloucestershire Lad.....Kip Em Cumin.....Douglas VICK.
Very interesting Chris, once the weather is warmer I will be in touch with you. Take care.
Thanks John, if I had hair I would be pulling it out, this blasted weather, awful!!
Wonderful! I am back in Gloucestershire this coming weekend for a wedding. Event will be in Tetbury with a wedding breakfast the next day in Nailsworth. Your films remind me of why I enjoy being back there.
Sadly we locals never appreciate it
we walk there , my wife and i she in wheelchair me pushing ,if you see us say hi
I will, it must be a struggle with the chair and the hills!
Glad you go into charity shops some good stuff in then ,Sadly Stroud Lost Trading Post Records this Yr , But Great Farmers Market on Saturdays there !! Best in the west, its a hilly but nice slower pace place..Antics We had one in Glos once .. Sadlly no more ,My father in law Loved modeling..Sadly On Cafes etc if i can,t get my wife in her wheelchair in its a no go .. But would like too
I haven't been into Gloucester for a while, has Antics closed there?
Once again, a fine choice of background music. I am familiar with Stroud and the effort needed to walk its hills. I shall be nearby in Nailsworth in a few days, so may drop into Stroud for another wander.
I too like Nailsworth, as I like Stroud. Best wishes.
